Review of the genus Austrophthiracarus (Acari, Oribatida, Phthiracaridae) with a description of a new species from Australia, a key to known species of the Australian Region and a world checklist

The oribatid mite genus Austrophthiracarus Balogh & Mahunka, 1978 (Phthiracaridae) is reviewed. Four species of Austrophthiracarus from Australia, including a new species, Austrophthiracarus dewalterisp. nov. from Queensland, are identified. A new name Austrophthiracarus niedbalai is proposed for the species Austrophthiracarus longisetosus Niedbala & Stary, 2015. Notophthiracarus (Protophthiracarus) neochilensis Subias, 2009 is considered as a new junior subjective synonym of Austrophthiracarus heteropilosus Niedbaa, 2004. A comprehensive, fully annotated and referenced checklist of all known species and a key to known species of the Australian Region are provided to facilitate the further study on this group. |
